This allows for multiple backup targets for NDMP backups, including NDMP-to-cloud strategies, and also allows the backup data stream to be taken onto a different network, usually ethernet, and off of the SAN. Data travels from the filer to the backup server, and then on to the desired target storage. The remote backup method includes a new party in the connection between your NAS and your designated data storage – the backup server. Remote Backup Architecture/Filer-to-server backup This type of backup sends backup data over the SAN which may create congestion or slowdowns for the clients accessing data. The usual protocols used in the connection between your NAS and your tape library are either Fibre Channel or SCSI. The direct connection allows for faster data transfer overall, but might be the limiting factor for some types of backup. This backup option implies that your tape library is directly connected to your NAS, and the data moves from each NAS directly to the tape library with no third parties in this connection. This architecture allows for better usage of tape library resources since there can be multiple sources – filers – that are filling the same part of the tape library. Backups flow from the first filer to the second, and then on to the storage medium. In a simple setup, one filer is attached to the NAS only and the other one is attached to your tape library. In the filer-to-filer model, filers (aka NAS or SAN storage devices) send and receive data to each other. The NDMP standard allows for three basic backup architectures – filer-to-filer backup, local backup and remote backup or Filer-to-server backup. And for very small startups with limited capital, having a free backup system is infinitely better than having none at all. Don’t get us wrong – these storage options are great for personal files, photos and videos, etc. If you work with highly sensitive client information, making use of public storage platforms might not be an option. Most free backup software clears your ‘trashed’ items from storage for good after a certain period of time – and then they’re gone forever. This isn’t a problem if you realise your mistake right away, but it’s a big problem if you don’t. The problem with this is that if you accidentally delete a file or folder on your mobile device, you might be deleting it from all your devices. Another big issue is that cloud server companies like the ones we mentioned above – depending on how you manage them – aren’t technically backup solutions, but syncing solutions. After all, these backup providers are hoping you’ll upgrade to a paid plan once you’ve come to rely on their software. Free backup software usually involves a limited amount of storage space and functionality. However, as the saying goes, you get what you pay for. Indeed, even large businesses make use of cloud storage services like Google Drive, and free backup platforms like DropBox or Microsoft One Drive. Free backup software can be an extremely useful tool for many small businesses and startups. ![]()
